Chapter 13

Out Of My League

I spent most of the rest of the morning in bed catching up on much-needed rest. The travel and excitement of seeing Jayson again got me through yesterday, but I really needed a nap to feel normal again. Around noon, Jayson sent me a text that I would have a ticket at will-call and he would send a car for me so I would get to the correct entrance. He asked that I arrive early so that he could see me after warm-ups. That request melted me and made me a little nervous. I obviously wanted to see him, but I also wanted to keep this for us. Shaking my head, I knew I could easily be another fan on the wall waiting for an autograph, and that I could manage.

The car would arrive at three, so I really didn’t need to rush. I enjoyed a long bath and took extra time to try and smooth my hair out. This humidity was not helping the situation. I finally settled on a pin-up-style ponytail that I could secure with a bandana. Now I just needed to hope that my makeup and hair wouldn’t sweat off before I saw him. To complement my hair and makeup choice, I decided on casual jeans and a t-shirt for the game. I cuffed my jeans and tucked my shirt in tight. Feeling good about how I looked, I made my way down to where the car would be waiting. As soon as the lobby doors opened, I was hit with a wall of heat and humidity. I was used to it being hot, but add eight-five-percent humidity, and you realize instantly what a sauna feels like. Yeah, I wasn’t going to look cute for long.

I had been to Raleigh plenty of times, but never in traffic like this. This rivaled rush hour in Los Angeles. The hotel wasn’t very far from the stadium, but it took over an hour to arrive. It took another thirty minutes to get up to where I was to be dropped off. Once we pulled up to the curb, the driver said, “Miss Cadence, please wait a moment while I let the office know that we have arrived. They will come down to collect you.” Collect me? I’m capable of picking up a ticket at a window. I suppose waiting in an air-conditioned car was better than standing in line, though. A few minutes later the door opened, and I was greeted by a nice young woman. She looked to be college-aged and had her brown hair pulled back in a casual ponytail. I also noticed that she was smart enough to be wearing shorts. It was so incredibly hot here. I don’t know why I thought jeans would be comfortable.

“Miss Cadence, my name is Sarena, and if you’ll follow me, I can show you to your seat and then take you over to where Mr. Martinez will be finishing up his warm-up. Can I get you something to drink?” Saying this was over the top wouldn’t be accurate.
